Senior Anna Baez Named Finalist for National Basketball Courage Award

Christian Life High School senior Anna Baez is making headlines for more than just her skills on the court. She’s a finalist for the 2025 Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award!

Out of hundreds of nominations from across the country, Anna’s strength, perseverance, and spirit earned her a spot among the top 10 finalists for this prestigious honor.

The Atlanta Tipoff Club presents this award to high school basketball players who show extraordinary courage, leadership, and resilience throughout the season. On February 20, the organization will announce one male and one female athlete as the winners. Each will receive a $2,000 donation to their high school basketball program. A video tribute will also celebrate their journey.

A Journey of Strength & Faith

Anna’s story is one of incredible determination. In November 2024, her life changed dramatically when doctors diagnosed her with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)—a rare, life-threatening reaction to pneumonia. At first, she had blistering, swelling, and a high fever. Her condition worsened quickly, turning into a fight for survival.

She spent 12 days in a burn center, battling sepsis, heart irregularities, and a severe skin infection that threatened her eyesight. Despite the pain and fear, Anna leaned on her faith and stayed positive. She inspired her family and medical team with her strength. Most importantly, her courage in facing this challenge shows the true spirit of a Naismith Award finalist.

Honoring True Grit

Eric Oberman, president of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, praised Anna and her fellow finalists. He said, “These young athletes show how sports can transform lives. Without a doubt, Anna is a symbol of resilience and determination. She inspires her teammates, peers, and the entire basketball community.”

Jersey Mike’s, a proud supporter of student-athletes, shared the same admiration. Rich Hope, Chief Marketing Officer of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc., stated, “High school athletes like Anna inspire us with their perseverance and positive impact. Her story proves the power of heart, grit, and determination.”

What’s Next?

On February 20, the organization will announce the two winners and share their inspiring stories nationwide. No matter the outcome, Anna Baez has already won the hearts of her school, community, and beyond. She proves that true champions aren’t just measured by points scored. They are defined by the courage they show in life’s toughest battles.

Way to go, Anna! Your Christian Life family is cheering you on! 🎉🏀
