Upper School Spanish Teacher
Get to know High School Spanish Teacher and Wrestling Coach, Lino Martinez. Señor, as students call him, loves getting to be in a place where he can watch and encourage students in their walks with the Lord!
What classes and grade level(s) do you teach?
I teach Upper-Level Spanish for the High School.
What do you love most about CLS?
I most appreciate the people here who have a heart and passion for the good Lord. It is so apparent that those here truly love the good Lord and are willing to serve in any capacity to do His will and give Him the glory. It is so enjoyable to come each day to a place where joy and love for our Savior are so evident. Is this the perfect place? Absolutely not. But this place has helped me grow in my walk, being surrounded by so many with a passion for the Lord.
Why do you like teaching at CLS?
I truly enjoy being able to work and challenge our young people spiritually, socially, academically, and athletically to strive to do their best each day for our good Lord. I relish each day with the opportunities that the good Lord gives to us serve Him and others, as we are free to express our faith in many ways! It is so neat to work with the next generation, at whatever place they are at, in many areas of their lives, while developing their Spanish skills.
How are faith and learning integrated at CLS?
Each day we have the opportunity to use God’s word to bring our lessons. We can put Him first, work to understand God and His plan for us. We can do this in so many aspects of our curriculum, as we glorify Him throughout the learning process. I have the privilege to do this in Spanish! Yet many will say that Spanish class is not just about the Spanish language and culture, but also about our lives and how we need to live for the good Lord.
How do you make a spiritual impact on your students?
As the good Lord is willing, each day I do my best to model what we are discussing when we use God’s word to start our day. We spend time discussing a variety of themes that connect to God’s word. We pray and sing praises to our good Lord. I also strive to walk the talk as best I can. Being excited and enthused about our good Lord, in all we do, is contagious to all.
What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?
Well, I have been around the block many more times than most, even our faculty. I have a vast amount of experience in a variety of areas. Sharing this experience can be very valuable to those who wish to listen and learn from the voice of experience. I have been blessed to still be able to communicate, relate, and impart wisdom to young people. I enjoy that challenge to connect with them and maybe share with them so they can glean and grow from my experiences and enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest for Him.
What sets CLS students apart from other students?
I truly believe that many young people here have a heart for the Lord, want to serve and glorify Him, and want others to know about His precious gift of salvation for all. They are so young and “wet behind the ears” but they want to grow in Him. Not all are at the same place, and many are still finding their way. Yet, having the opportunity each day to help them in their walk, as I too stumble, is such a power challenge, especially in our world today. With the good Lord’s will, I stand ready to meet that challenge to help prepare our coming generations to live for Him!
